Status Secured

The successful specialist schools bid for Science and Maths means that Rushcliffe will automatically retain Training School status for the next four year cycle. From now on re-designation will form part of the OFSTED process and will require us to meet the HPSS (high-performing specialist school) criteria as well as key-indicators as defined by the Training and Development Agency.

Research-engaged project

Towards the end of last year we undertook a research project which was funded by the TDA. We had to identify a hypothesis to explore and hopefully prove through our evidence-gathering. Our hypothesis was: “Being a training school has had a positive impact upon CPD in relation to our focus on Thinking Skills and Metacognitive Learning”.

An audit of a sample of departments was undertaken through interviews with curriculum leaders and a scrutiny of schemes of work to identify impact of these initiatives in the wider curriculum. In addition, evaluation forms were circulated to other curriculum leaders, Learning Development Group members, pupils and trainees.

The majority of responses highlighted the positive impact of these two strategies in school in terms of professional development for staff and progress for pupils. It was pleasing to see how valuable this work was seen to be by all of those involved but particularly the PGCE students attached to Year 7 Brainwaves lesson. One other conclusion to be drawn from this research was that the impact of these strategise now needs to be extended further across the curriculum so that key skills and approaches are reinforced right across the curriculum.

Plans for 07/ 08

New-style LDG: The Learning Development Group has moved away from its focus on Thinking Skills and will now address teaching and learning priorities for the school as identified by departments through response forms sent out in the summer term. There will be a different focus each term providing the opportunity for a range of staff to become involved from each curriculum team. The priorities identified are: AFL, Modelling and Lesson Design for Lower Attainers.

Enriched PD Programmes: We are delivering extended programmes of support for staff at a variety of stages in their development. Examples include:

  • Further induction sessions for all new staff and repeat sessions for anyone who misses the main induction day.
  • An enriched programme of meetings and activities for NQT's.
  • The option of a “Learning to Lead” programme for any aspiring curriculum leaders.

Outreach events: We will be delivering a range of training events in the summer term 08 to share developments and expertise in a number of areas. These will be open to any interested colleagues from neighbouring schools as well as trainees from local HEI's. Topics to include:

  • Raising Boys' Achievement
  • Effective use of IWB's / Digital Projectors
  • Assessment for Learning
  • Virtual Learning Environment
