Diary

Hi, I’m Cassie and I’m Sam

We’re both in Year 7 and we’re going to be your guides to settling in at Rushcliffe School.

Our form tutor is Mrs Hallam and we first met her when we came for the Induction Day last July. That seems like a long time ago now!

These are photos of us on our induction day having an art lesson.

We thought we would never find our way around such a big school, but it’s not as bad as we thought. We still get lost occasionally, but there is always someone to ask for help.

We are going to start our diary by telling you about some of the things we did in our first week, so we hope you enjoy reading it.

Bye!

Cassie and Sam

Week 1

On the first day we both felt quite excited, not too nervous, about putting on our new school uniforms and travelling to school. In the first week it’s the lunches and getting lost that everyone is most worried about. But don’t worry about getting lost! Our whole class got lost on the way to French! Our teacher was not cross, just concerned about where we were. It was a good test about how we can work together as a class (or not!) In the first week all year 7 can come out of the lesson before lunch 5 minutes early to get to the queue. Our advice would be to wait 5 minutes for the queue to die down or use the stall in A Hall which is usually quieter.

"At the end of the week, I felt quite relieved, but part of the school, not new any more."

"Friday is the best day because we finish with Art. The time passes quickly and it’s soon the end of the week, even though I’m tired."

Week 2

We can find our way around school really easily now – no getting lost this week.

If you’re looking forward to sporting activities, football and netball trials begin this week. This is for competitive matches between other schools.

In our PSHCE* lessons with our tutor, we have been talking about our ambitions. This is about aiming high, but being realistic too. Our tutor said that in an ideal world, she would have liked to marry Brad Pitt!

*Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship.

Week 3

This week we have been to Walesby Scout Camp for a team building day. The best fun activity was rock climbing; even those people who thought they were afraid of heights achieved it. The best team building activity was called ‘Group Games’ which was a problem solving jigsaw. At the end we had to evaluate how we could have done it better. There was a lot of arguing! Other activities we did were Blindfold Trail, Archery and Brain Drain

"I tripped over a tree during the blindfold trail which was really embarrassing and I think I was the slowest, but it was still great fun!

The whole day helped us to work as a team, get to know each other and respect each other."

Week 4

"Activities club started this week. Neither of us went but our friends that did go said it was really good. You can do swimming which the majority of people did. They put the floats out and you can use the flumes as well."

"You can also do basketball, badminton, tennis and table tennis. So there’s lots to do and I’m sure if you decide to go when you’re at Rushcliffe you’ll have a great time. This week I forgot my swimming trunks, but next week I’m going to remember so that I can take part as well!"

Week 5

We had our first English assessment this week. We had to perform a radio presentation about Michael Morpurgo as part of the transition unit. The teacher was very nice about it and we both got great marks.

"I was quite nervous about performing in front of the class, but it was all worth it when I got my marks. So don't worry about assessments, I guarantee you'll sail though them."

"I was a newsreader and so afraid that i would go wrong. Luckily, I didn't, because of great organisation, a skill which helps in every lesson."

Week 6

This week was boys inter-form football. All the forms apart from 2 entered. 7H, our form, looked very strong because we had a very good team. After the group stages, the finalists were 7H (us) and 7W. We all knew it was going to be a close match, but in the end 7W came out on top winning the game 2-1.

Week 7

This week we had a few assessments, but nothing to worry about. We coped with them quite easily. They’re just there to see if you are at your best standard. You get marked with a + = U or R. If you get a +, it means that you are working above your standard, if you get an = it means you are working at your working standard, if you get a U it means you are working below standard and R means you have to re-do the work (which doesn’t happen very often!.)

Week 8

We’ve just come back from a half term holiday this week. We definitely needed the rest. But now, we don’t feel new to the school because we know all our teachers and can find our way around school easily. Although, when our PE topic changes, it’s hard to know where to wait for the teacher. We have to remember to look at the timetable in the PE department.

I feel better after the rest and find it easier to concentrate.

The half term really helped because I needed a break from uniform and a chance to meet up with my friends.

Week 9

Sam and I both have quite a few commendations. These are kind of like reward points that you get in Rushcliffe. You can get one or more every time you’ve done something good. E.g. worked hard, improved a skill, completed a really good piece of work, made a positive contribution to the school. When you have a certain amount, you get a prize. These prizes get better and better as you get more commendations.

I like commendations. The prizes are cool.

I really want to get my silver award

Last week of term

A lot of things have been happening at Rushcliffe in the weeks before the Christmas break. We raised enough money for Children in Need by selling teddy bears in a raffles and we’ve heard that the teddy bear auction did very well. To raise awareness during anti-bullying week, a year 9 girl won a competition to design a poster to show why bullying is wrong. In the last few days before we break up, we’ve been making Christmas cards, learning about Christmas in France and creating Christmas poems in English.

I can’t wait until Christmas now. All the cards and games are making me really excited.
We get to go bowling on the afternoon of the last day. Even though I’m rubbish at it, it’s going to be great fun.

Merry Christmas, Year 6 and a happy 2007!

Moving to Rushcliffe ……………. It’s not long now !!!!

Whilst we hope you enjoy your last Summer Term at Primary School, we hope you are also looking forward to September 4 th. Between now and then you will be visiting Rushcliffe to meet your form tutor and to sample some typical lessons.
