A Specialist School Update.

The first half term as a Specialist School for Science and Maths has been very successful and a number of events have already taken place to raise the profile of Science and Maths within our school and community. |

Our first event was the Carbon Challenge in September. Pupils in Year 10 were involved in a day run by B.P.. In a two hour session pupils were able to calculate the Carbon Footprint of a given school and then looked at strategies to reduce the carbon footprint for schools. The day was to raise the awareness of carbon use and its links to climate change whilst developing Scientific understanding and the application of Maths when solving problems.

Our second event was a whole school event which took place on October 5 th . 'Jeans for Genes Day' is a National Fundraising and Raising Awareness Day which supports a number of charities. During the lead up to the day each year group had an assembly which informed them of the day, listed the charities involved and how funds that had been raised had been used in the past. All years were invited to wear Jeans for the day and in Science, Maths, English and Art pupils were involved in lessons which addressed issues to do with genetics. The Food Technology Department involved pupils making Blueberry Muffins which were sold during the day. It was a very positive day which raised £1100 for the charities and we would like to thank all staff and pupils involved in making the day so successful. We are doing follow up work with the School Council and pupil's thoughts from the day will be fed back in a later edition of Parent Post.

The next half term sees a series of further events taking place. During Chemistry Week, key stage 4 and 5 pupils will be taking part in a variety of lectures to promote the study of Chemistry and raise awareness of the career opportunities in this field. A trip to Paris has been arranged for a number of year 8 pupils to visit La Villette and further develop their language skills. A number of year 8 pupils will begin their quest to gain a Bronze Crest Award which is a national science and technology competition where pupils carryout an investigation into an area of interest. Science and Math staff have been busily planning a series of lessons to be delivered in our feeder primary schools later this term.
