Teaching science raises students curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It also teaches them to investigate these processes and as they do this, it enables them to learn how to analyse, research, plan and make decisions about what they are observing.
To support this and high achievments we have high expectations, clear learning objectives, pace and challenge and a variety of learning activities.
It is our firm belief that all pupils should succeed in science lessons and differentiation is based on work common to all pupils in a class, with targeted support to help those who have difficulties and those that are more able. |

Science at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) |

| At this stage, science lessons build on knowledge, understanding and skills acquired and developed at Key Stage 2 (Primary School) The programme of study for Key Stage 3 emphasises the development of five key scientific ideas: |

- Interdependence
- Particles
- Forces
- Energy

During Key Stage 3, pupils will develop their understanding so that they recognise, use and then apply each of the ideas in different contexts. |

Science at Key Stage 4 (GCSE study – years 10 -11) |
| |
| At this stage, pupils study either AQA (Assessment & Qualification Alliance) Double Award or AQA Single Award. Each pupil experiences five hours of science if they follow the Double Award and three if the follow the Single Award. Some pupils will follow separate sciences.
During year 10, pupils sit modular tests which make up 30% of their final GCSE mark. There are three tests for those studying the single award and six for the double.
KS4 Teaching Units
Coursework is a feature of Year 10 and 11 and all coursework must be handed to science staff by February. This form of assessment makes up 20% of the final mark.

| Post 16 Study (A Levels) |
| |
Study at this level is very popular and 60% of the current year 12 study a science. Pupils who study Biology and Physics follow the OCR syllabus and pupils studying Chemistry follow OCR/SALTERS. Pupils studying a science at post 16 experience four lessons in year 12 and five lessons in year 13.
