Key Stage 2

We have good links with our feeder primary schools and pupils will start a maths bridging unit in the last term of year 6. A member of the maths department will visit the school and teach one of the lessons.

Key Stage 3

On entry pupils are taught in tutor groups for the first 2/3 weeks of the term. They continue the bridging unit that was started in year 6. The work is differentiated to allow for the spread of ability within the class.

Pupils are then placed into groups according to ability. There are two parallel halves.

Pupils follow one of three schemes of work targeted at specific national curriculum levels.

Groups 1 and 2

Levels 5 – 6

Groups 3 and 4

Levels 4 – 5

Group 5

Levels 3 - 4

There are regular assessment points every 6 weeks or so. Pupil progress is formally assessed at these points and any intervention made at this time. We aim to be as flexible as possible in this process and should the class teacher recommend a move or intervention out side of this assessment point then the needs of the pupils will be acted upon.

As well as regular ‘in house’ assessment pupils are assessed using QCA optional SATS at the end of year 7. These along with teacher recommendation generate the students year 8 group.

In year 8 pupils again follow a differentiated curriculum at the following levels.

Groups 1 and 2

Levels 6 - 7

Group 3

Levels 5 - 6

Group 4

Levels 4 - 5

Group 5

Levels 3 – 5

The assessment procedure follows the same pattern as year 7. Pupils sit optional year 8 SATS

In year 9 pupils are placed in groups that target specific end of key stage 3 SAT levels

Within each year group pupils also complete an assessed statistics and investigational task.

After pupils have completed their SATS they start their GCSE course.
