Assessment

Key Stage 3

Students can achieve a range of National Curriculum levels from 4-8. If students work well we would expect students to progress one level each year. Over the last couple of years the department has worked hard to embed a variety of different assessment tasks within the Key stage 3 course. Some examples are listed below:

Year 7 – “Litter survey around Rushcliffe school”

Year 8 – “Destruction in the Rainforest”

Year 9 – “Why was the Asian Tsunamis such a massive disaster?”

There is a strong emphasis on Assessment for Learning within Key Stage 3. For each assessment students are provided with a child friendly mark schemes. This ensures that students are aware of how they can achieve their target National Curriculum level and build upon prior attainment. Alongside this it is departmental policy to provide constructive feedback to students on how they can achieve the next level after completing an assignment in order that they can use this advice to inform future assessments

Key stage 4

What is the structure of the exam course?

The DME (Decision making exercise)

Final Written Exam

Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on Assessment for learning. Every three/four week’s students will complete a timed past GCSE exam question and will then be responsible to mark their own answers. These assessments are helpful in a two ways. Firstly it identifies any gaps or misconceptions in their understanding at an early point and secondly it enables the students to become familiar with what the examiner wants. From experience students find these past questions and the marking of them a valuable strategy in helping their learning
